Enthusiasm for window feeders is unusually consistent, with owners describing a level of detail you simply do not get at pole distance. It is also the option that works for renters and balconies where a pole is not allowed.

Suction cups are the weak point

Cups letting go in heat, cold or after a few weeks is the complaint that dominates. The remedies that recur are cleaning both the glass and the cups thoroughly, wetting them before mounting, and re-seating them seasonally.

Very close to the glass is the safe distance

On collision risk, the reasoning that comes up is that a feeder mounted directly on the window means birds cannot build up enough speed to be hurt. It is the middle distance of a few feet that is treated as the dangerous one.

Be careful if outdoor cats visit

Owners raise this themselves rather than being prompted: a window feeder at a ground-floor window can become a trap if cats prowl the yard, and height plus a clear approach is the mitigation people describe.

Patience is required, and the seed choice helps

A new window feeder can go ignored for weeks. The advice that recurs is to run it alongside an established feeder so birds discover it, and to use hulled seed so the mess does not land on the sill below.
