The 10-minute watch
The fastest way to stop reading about birding and start doing it. Ten minutes, any window, no binoculars. You are not trying to name anything.
How it works
- 1. Find any window, balcony, step or bench. A city street is fine — pigeons and sparrows count.
- 2. Start the timer and just watch. Movement first: rooflines, wires, hedges, the ground.
- 3. For every bird, ask one question — bigger or smaller than a robin?Tap the tally. Don't look anything up.
- 4.Mark it complete. That's one Level 0 skill genuinely practised, not just read.

Tally as you go
Don't name anything. Just size, against a robin. That's the whole skill at this level — names come later, and they come easier once shape and size are automatic.
Smaller than a robin
sparrow, chickadee, finch
About robin-sized
robin, cardinal, jay-ish
Bigger than a robin
crow, dove, gull, hawk
Done watching?
Even zero is a result. Quiet patches are data too, and the next one won't be quiet.
Why size before names
Colour is the least reliable thing about a bird — it changes with light, season, age and molt. Size and shape barely change at all. Birders who learned names first tend to stall; birders who learned silhouette first keep improving. So the first skill is a comparison, not a vocabulary list.
